Meeting report

Meeting at Room at the Top
15th June 2010.

Those present

Dick, Liliane, Peter, Les, Jane, Linda, Tony, Dave, Trish and Barry
(Chair) and new member Malcolm.

First of all I would like to welcome Malcolm, who showed considerable
determination to undertake the trek from Hollesley to our meeting. We
hope he will find the group a sufficient draw to keep him coming in
the future.

Welcome back to Les after a weeks enforced confinement in Ipswich
Hospital where he was nursed back to health by our NHS professionals
there. We were pleased to find that his stay had not dampened his
natural wit which showed through having completed his homework in a
hospital bed. No mean feat!!!

The homework subject was 'Absent Friends' and as usual we had the
diverse interpretations of this theme, both humorous and those of a
more serious nature.

All pieces were received with enthusiasm and we noticed a slight
change in the temperature of the meeting whereby there was a bit more
interchanging of views on the works.

With eleven present it might be that we were worried over nothing with
regard to our flagging attendance figures; we shall see. Anyway, the
meeting seemed to go off well and what follows is a list of the pieces
entered and read last night.

Dick: Absent Friends?
Trish: Whiskey
Liliane: A toast to absent friends
Peter: Behind their back
Les: Take me home
Jane: Baking day
Malcolm: The Pied Piper of Lambeth
Linda: Bitter Sweet
Dave: Tragedy of War
Tony: Chapter 17. No place like Emoh
Barry: The road sweeper

The next meeting will be on the 6th July when the homework assignment will be up to 1,000 words on 'Mountaineering".

See you there!

Barry

Committee meeting

Felixstowe Scribblers Committee Meeting Tuesday 8th June 2010.

Present: Dick, Peter, Barry, Ruth and Dave.

This informal meeting was called to appoint a new secretary to replace Dave who retired from the post and to look at the structure of the group and the format of the meetings.

As we have not heard from Alex it was decided to reduce the committee strength by one, this being Alex’s post.

The position of secretary has been accepted by Barry who will take up his post on Tuesday 15th June at the next Scribblers meeting.

Ruth remains as Social Secretary, Peter as Treasurer, Dick as recorder and Dave, who remains a committee member, will take responsibility for the weblog(s).

We had a number of suggestions over the recent large drop in attendances at the meetings and each was discussed and then compared to a cross section of twenty-one other groups through the UK.

Most groups meet as we do, fortnightly (or twice a month), some meet monthly whilst the minority meet weekly.

Generally our meeting format falls in line with most, the main difference being that the majority of groups charge an annual fee up to £35 together with a meeting fee. The wealthier clubs then have the ability to book regular guest speakers, authors, editors and the like.

As far as Felixstowe Scribblers are concerned we seem to have a similar criteria inviting a guest speaker for the last two years and this, without an annual fee. However it has been agreed to increase the suggested voluntary contribution each meeting from 50p to £1 starting in July.

Despite attempts at the last three AGMs to find out whether our meeting format and programme needed altering, it seemed everyone was happy as it was. Now, though, comments have been made whereby homework assignments, voluntary as they are, have become too onerous for some. Discussing this at length the committee decided to change the programme of meetings. One meeting a month will be for homework assignments only, in other words no more than twelve assignments per year. These will be set at the end of the homework meetings thus giving a full four weeks to create the work. When attendances are low we may also use time for impromptu writing exercises.

The second meeting of the month will be altered to encompass the Bill Budner Trophy and creative writing sessions led by a member of the committee. Where it is possible then a guest speaker may be brought in, subject to cost and availability.

Comments concerning the lack of feedback seem to apply to other groups as well. Here at Felixstowe we have always fought against harsh criticism but will be supportive and provide constructive comment as time permits. We have also declared in the past that it is very hard to give full and proper comment just from listening once to a piece of work. We offered an alternative to those who wanted feedback for them to provide a copy of their work that could be taken away and read in leisure. The feedback could be given at the next meeting, passed direct to the writer or even remain anonymous. With many of us on the Internet there is also the possibility of stories being emailed to each other for comment.

One new facility that we will provide in the very near future will be a password protected blog where members can post and share their work and will be able to comment on and receive feedback.

Your committee hopes you will appreciate its attempts at maintaining our high standards and delivering many of the items which were asked of us. Felixstowe Scribblers writing group provides a unique experience and will remain open to constructive comment and maintain its keenness to be progressive.

Welcome Barry, our new secretary

New secretary Barry (right) takes over from Dave who steps down after ten years in the post.

Our Next Meeting

We have heard news that Les was rushed to hospital on Tuesday and remains there at present. Please send out your thoughts to him. He's a lovely chap so, Les, get well soon mate!

Our next meeting is fast approaching and takes place on Tuesday 15th June at 7.30pm in the Room at the Top, Felixstowe Library. The theme for the homework assignment this time is "Absent Friends". Maximum word count of 1,000.

As you will know we held our committee meeting earlier this week and the news is that Barry will take over as secretary from the 15th. Welcome Barry and good luck! Committee decisions will be announced on Tuesday evening.

The Suffolk Book League is hosting the launch of the latest book, 'Across the Blood-Red Skies', by bestselling local author Robert Radcliffe; as Robert Mawson his novel 'Lazarus Child' was in all the headlines due to the size of the advance he was given. Robert will be talking about writing for publication - how he organises his work, how to be aware of what will appeal to agents and publishers. This takes place on Thursday 17 June 2010, Ipswich Insititute Tavern St 7.00 and is FREE. Scribblers are welcome to go along, have a glass of wine and see whether Robert has anything to say that could help you!

Another popular Writers Cafe takes place at 8.00pm on Monday 28th June in the Wicked Cafe in the UCS Waterfront Building in Ipswich.

Meanwhile, lets all send Les every good wish for a speedy recovery.

Puppy Poems

A message received via Sue from Gaby Morgan at Macmillan children's books reads:

"I am compiling a collection of Puppy Poems for publication in early 2011. I am looking for a wide range of poems about every kind of dog for readers of 7+. I want the collection to be sweet and appealing but not too sentimental. I would like some poems about new puppies but also poems about faithful friends, clever dogs, pampered pooches etc. Poems about famous dogs in history, heroic and film star dogs etc are welcome. I will need the poems by Thursday the 17th of June."

FELIXSTOWE SCRIBBLERS NEWSHEET

Incorporating
the

REPORT OF THE MEETING HELD 1st JUNE 2010

Apologies: Jane, Trish and Sue.

Present: Dick, Liliane, Rani, Tony, Barry, Peter, and Dave (chair)

SCRIBBLERS NEWS

Yet another extremely disappointing turnout that causes great concern amongst the few regulars who attend. It has been worrying to see our numbers drop from a top attendance of twenty eight down to a recent average of only seven or eight. Obviously there are holidays and other events that come up which is quite understandable but sometimes, when writers stop coming to meetings, we hope that we have helped them on their way to a successful writing career.

In the email sent advertising this meeting we asked for any suggestions that might improve our evenings or deliver what you want but have only received a couple of replies so far. We need to know what you want from our meetings, how we might improve, possibly with a new structure or a complete revamp of our programme.

It has been suggested we advertise for new members and circulate questionnaires to everyone who has attended in the past five or six months to find out why they have stopped coming along. Having attempted in past AGM’s to discover if members want format changes, but everyone seemed quite happy with the existing structure – so why the dramatic drop in numbers?

As a group we have always had a very high standard of writing from our members proven with publication of novels and short stories and doing well in competitions. That is success! We still aim to be progressive and deliver what our members want and remain, as always, open to suggestions of how to improve things - even down to how we have offered to help with the age old problem of feedback.

Any ideas, please email scribblers@btinternet.com by Sunday 6th June in preparation for the committee meeting next week. We really hope to hear from you.

On a positive note it was nice to see Rani again who had travelled down from London in the afternoon.

We all have a personal invitation from Geraldine Rose to attend the launch of her book ‘Feeding Strawberries to Pigs’ which is an anthology of short stories. The launch will take place at Cretingham Golf Club on Saturday July 3rd at 7.30. Tickets will cost £10 and will include a hog roast and strawberries. Profits will be donated to another worthy cause, The Meningitis Research Foundation so go to www.meningitis.org to read why this is Geraldine’s chosen charity.

As numbers will be restricted, tickets should be booked as soon as possible from Tickets4u2010@yahoo.co.uk. Raffle prizes would be very welcome.

On the subject of books, don’t forget that Barry’s novel ‘Strictly a Family Affair’ is available for sale. It’s a good one and definitely worth purchasing. Details from Barry.

THE PLATFORM

The two 1,500 word open themed topics were read by Liliane and Barry.

Liliane: Feng Shui
Barry: Divine Intervention

The 500 + word homework theme “Rainbow”

Dick: The Golden Rainbow
Rani: The Bear, the Book and the Boat
Tony: A Rainy Day in Plankton
Peter: Rainbow Fortune
Dave: Under the Rainbow

It was rewarding discussing each piece of original and entertaining work in so much detail, something that is only possible with such a low turnout.

The meeting ended in hilarity when reading a script of the children’s television programme ‘Rainbow’ which was banned for its double entendres. Each Scribbler was assigned a part to read but was honestly doubled up with laughter. The script was quite near the mark but so very funny. Tony even suggested that Rushmere Players might like to use it in a future production – apart from copyright issues, after the rejection of the play ‘The Crabby Arms’ this would surely be too adult for them!

Our Next Meeting will be on Tuesday 15th June at 7.30pm in the Room at the Top, Felixstowe Library. With recent low turnouts the homework assignment has been increased to 1,000 words with the theme this time on “Absent Friends”.

Committee members please note that next Tuesday’s committee meeting starts at 7.30.

Until then,

Keep Scribbling!
