New website

In attendance: Stephen, Liliane, Dick, Martin, Beryl, Les, Peter, Tony, Trish, Gemma and Dave (Chair)
Apologies received from Ruth who was undergoing an eye operation.
A warm welcome went out to our new member Martin who has been writing for about two years. He has attended a writer’s course at Suffolk College but now wants to gain experience within the writing community. Word has it that he has already submitted a script to the BBC so fingers crossed he has some good news from them in the coming weeks.
Another piece of good news is that Ally received an email requesting her to send the first three chapters of ‘Drift’ following a successful submission of the first 10 pages. She spent the whole evening proofing those chapters looking for any mistakes she might have missed and ‘drove herself crazy’ until she was finally satisfied and sent them off after 11pm. Let’s cross all the other fingers and wish her success. Ally is also going to submit to Penguin and Dorchester although she is currently trying to up the word count to 60k from around 57k to meet the criteria. Don’t forget you can read Ally’s first chapter of ‘Drift’ on http://keeponscribbling.blogspot.com Ally has also posted details of submissions to Penguin and Dorchester on the same weblog. The Jack Wilkinson Memorial Walk took place last Sunday and had a good turn-out of over thirty people although for a while three walkers including Mr.Cobbler (Scott) and his wife went missing but eventually emerged duly refreshed from MacDonald’s! The walk was in aid of Cancer Research and once sponsorship is collected there will be a nice cheque available for the charity.
Congratulations go to Jack’s mother Caz who very recently gave her fiftieth pint of blood, quite an achievement. Caz, along with Ruth and Barry have all been heard live on Radio Suffolk in the last few weeks.
Our next Scribblers Social is on Saturday 16th October at the Castle Lodge Hotel, Felixstowe. Guest speaker is Maureen Blundel. The evening is open to Scribblers and guests. Costing £15 per person for a 3 course meal you should arrive at 7.00pm for dinner at 7.30pm. Please book directly with the hotel (tel: 282149 or pop in). Bookings will be taken on a first come, first served basis. 20 places available.
On Saturday & Sunday Maureen will be running group workshops, and individual sessions and details of available places and bookings should be made direct to Maureen by email to liberato@talktalk.net.
Recently we have had wishes passed to us from Belinda in Queensland, Chris in Cairns and Rochelle who is currently recuperating from an operation. Ironically Belinda donated her cash winnings from the open Bill Budner competition that enabled us to purchase the Trophy which Scott engraves at Mr Cobblers in Felixstowe.
This leads us to the anonymous competition for the Bill Budner Trophy. This meeting was another fabulous evening of creativity with some really marvellous stories which were a real tribute to Bill’s memory.

The format for these Trophy meetings has worked very successfully and produced many enthralling and exciting stories that it is a testament to the abilities of our members that so many have their names engraved on the Trophy. It is, of course, a fitting tribute to the memory of dear friend Bill that so many winners have shared the spotlight. What is also very gratifying is that all winners have been a mixture of both published and hobby writers. Believe it or not we still have some amazing writers who have yet to take this coveted prize...
Our next meeting is on Tuesday 5th October in The Room at the Top, when there will be a maximum of 1,000 words on the subject of ‘Advertising’. How you include this in your story is left to your own creative imagination.

Congratulations to the winner of The Bill Budner Trophy
The Bill Budner Trophy, held every four months, has been staged on eleven occasions and last night we found our new trophy winner, Liliane Sivaraj.
Congratulations to Liliane with for her well deserved win with her excellent story, "The Plane."
Amazingly Liliane became the tenth different winner of the trophy and she is depicted above receiving the silverware from the previous holder Tony Shearman who, ironically, is the only writer to have won the trophy twice!
With each 1,000 word story submitted anonymously, then randomly selected by other writers, everyone has a few minutes to familiarise themselves with the story before being asked to read it out. Each participating Felixstowe Scribbler then chooses their top three stories in order before the scores are counted up and the trophy presented.
This format has worked so successfully and produced so many enthralling and exciting stories that it is the testament to the abilities of our members that so many have their names engraved on the Trophy. It is a fitting tribute to the memory of dear friend Bill that so many winners have shared the spotlight. What is also very gratifying is that all winners have been a mixture of both published and hobby writers. Believe it or not we still have some amazing writers who have yet to take this coveted prize.
Well done Liliane, and thank you to all participants for a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Our next meeting - The coveted Bill Budner Trophy
Our next meeting is coming up on Tuesday 21st September at Felixstowe Library at 7.30pm. It's our anonymous meeting for the Bill Budner Trophy meeting so we will all be hoping to come out on tops and hold the trophy for the next four months!
This is an open themed competition with a maximum of 1,000 words on any subject you like! Your entry should be typed if possible but not contain your name or any clue to your identity. On arrival please place your work face down on the table provided. A little later all attendees will be asked to select a story, have a few minutes to acquaint themselves with the content before being asked to read it out. Everyone present will be able to choose their top three choices and selected members will count the marks during the interval then declare the winner. The cup will then be awarded and be engraved by our good friend Scott at Mr Cobbler. http://www.mrcobblerandmrlocks.co.uk/
Spare a thought for Rochelle Moore our Irish author friend who is currently recuperating from an operation.
On a personal note I have just read Barry's 'Strictly a Family Affair' which has an excellent and compulsive story line so if you haven't already got a copy then now is the time to buy!

Bet you thought you'd never hear from us again… well, we're back and stronger than ever. Sure, we hit a slight bump in the road during our disappearance (meaning a move to the beautiful Green Mountains of Vermont and realizing that not every part of this amazing country has internet service) but we've pulled ourselves out of the darkness of these technological mishaps to once again bring you some of the best and most innovative writing out there in the world today.

Scribblers in print
If you want a good read, or just to sample the writing talent of the Scribblers then you could not better Barry's 'Strictly a Family Affair' or Ruth's second novel 'The Woman Before Me'.
We have just received best wishes and fondest regards from our dear friend Belinda who is back home in Australia. Although busy as a bee, she has been published in two anthology volumes named 'The Python Speaks' by the Caboolture Writers' Link of whom she is a member.
Staying Down Under another of our good friends Chris has a new book coming up. Entitled 'My Chocolate Soldier' Chris intimates that it has plenty of 'gratuitous sex and violence' which we must keep an eye out for!

A revealing insight maybe.... or just one for the boys?
Not a subject Felixstowe Scribblers would normally advertise here but as this is not X-rated material the choice is yours....
A journalist working on a new book called The Sex Diaries Project, published by Random House in 2011, is looking for men to get involved.
The book isn't necessarily as X-rated as the title implies. Essentially, it's a collection of seven-day anonymous diaries written by Brits of every age, background and situation, capturing a snapshot of the nation behind closed doors. It's about real people being honest and open about sex, relationships, love and romance.
All diarists need to do is keep a diary for one week, noting every thought, event and conversation about relationships/love/sex etc. She'd love to hear from men to ensure the book truly reflects the UK's demographics and provides a genuine insight into the way we negotiate our intimate lives.
This could be an interesting exercise for the members of the Felixstowe Scribblers or any male friends and writers you know.

Meeting report for 7th September 2010
Present: Jack, Jane, Lauren, Rosie, Gemma, Tony, Les, Ruth, Beryl, Liliane, Peter, Barry, Dave and Dick (chair)
Apologies: Trish and Stephen.
Yet again a meeting with a brilliant turnout. The subject matter for the homework could not have been more ordinary or mundane but the content of pieces that were on offer was tremendous. Sitting as an observer (until it was my turn to offer a rendition) and obviously to Dave and Dick who followed me, I was struck by the quality of the work from our group. The youngest [a big hello and thanks for coming back to Lauren] who had returned after a period of time in which she seems to have grown two feet in height, at 14 years she shows great talent and our next newest member Gemma who has grown in confidence since the last meeting, the offerings were received with admiration and much laughter.
On a sadder note we bid goodbye to Rosie, who has been a staunch supporter of the group since her arrival in 2007. She left us last night with regret but with great hope and expectations from us all as she begins life at Nottingham Uni at the end of September. She is reading law and we wish her well.
Rosie won the original Bill Budner children’s' short story competition that Maureen set up in memory of her husband. Rosie was announced as winner in April 2007 with her work "Driftwood". She first attended Scribblers on 15th May 2007 not having known about our group previously and became the second winner of our inhouse Bill Budner Trophy competition on 4th Sept the same year with "Wooden Roses".
Such a talented writer - there's a small piece on this weblog - scroll down to read it - I'm sure we'll all miss her but wish her well on her journey in life.
I think our other new member, Beryl, has settled into life within our group having now understood the implications of being associated with a bunch of off the wall, but basically very friendly characters. We wish her luck also, and the stamina to keep attending the meetings.
Everyone seems to think that their own piece somehow detracts from the tone of other offerings but as I said, our group seems to have the talent in just our few members to keep an agency busy for life. (Perhaps we should advertise for one?)
This brings me to the final part of the meeting synopsis. Ruth has had her latest book published and following a bubbly interview on BBC Radio Suffolk she will be in Felixstowe Library to give a talk to those interested in Agents, Publishers etc. This will be from 11am on Saturday 11th September.
Also I can confirm, the next Scribblers Social is as follows:
Saturday 16th October. Arrival 7.00, for dinner 7.30.
Evening Meal at the Castle Lodge Hotel, with guest speaker Maureen Blundel.
£15 per person for 3 courses.
Everyone welcome - friends & partners too.
Please book directly with the hotel (tel: 282149 or pop in). Bookings will be taken on a first come, first served basis. 20 places available.
On the Saturday & Sunday Maureen will be running group workshops, and individual sessions. She still has spaces available. To book please contact her on liberato@talktalk.net.
Scribblers as a group, has had a request from Maurice James for any of our members to enter the Coast to Coast competition. The details are shown below. Your support for worthwhile causes would be welcomed.
Coast to Coast Writing Competitions
BUDDING writers, and prospective poet laureates, are invited to sharpen their quills and submit their original work for entry in the Coast to Coast Writing Competitions.
The competitions, which have five separate categories, are held monthly throughout the year.
Each month, a winner, along with a minimum of three runners-up from each section, are selected. These finalists will have their work re-read throughout December when the finals take place.
Entries may be either published or unpublished pieces, including work that may have been submitted to other competitions, and be typed or legibly hand-written.
There is an entry fee of £4.50 for each category - a portion of which will benefit various charities.
The five categories are:
a. short stories up to 2,000 words.
b. rhymed poetry - up to fifty lines.
c. free verse-up to fifty lines.
d. anything humorous in poetic or prose form.
e. young writers up to and including seventeen years of age are invited to submit entries for the above categories – date of birth essential for this category.(Entrance fees from this category will benefit the East Anglian Children's Hospice).
Winners will receive prizes of book gift vouchers and publication of their work.
Entries should be posted along with an entry fee of £4.50 made payable to Ouse Valley Poetry to: Maurice James (Writing), Flat 1, 9, Wellington Street, Waterloo, Liverpool, L22 8QL.

Good luck Rosie!
Tonight's meeting was a mixture of elation and sadness - really great news that our talented young writer Rosie has a place at Nottingham University where she will study Law.
Sad for the Scribblers though as Rosie attended for the final time before setting off for Uni. Perhaps she saved her best for last with a brilliantly humourous story. Members will recall that Rosie won the open junior short story competition set in memory of writer Bill Budner, then went on to become one of the first winners of our inhouse competition for the trophy in Bill's name. Here's a photo of Rosie with the trophy.

Currently our talented friend Ally has posted the first chapter of her book and she really deserves some feedback, so come along scribblers! If you're already a member then have a read and let Ally know what you think, if you're not, then don't be shy you can always join up!

Felixstowe TV
Last night, Tuesday 31st August 2010, saw the sad end of an enjoyable era. Yes The Bill screened it's last ever episode after some twenty-six remarkable years. Shame on ITV for ending one of the most popular series ever to be screened.
But wait....
There was another very sad event last night as well. The closure of the popular Felixstowe TV. Started six years ago by Chris Gosling who ran it for two tireless years, it passed to Giles Meehan and David Jennings who ran it up to the very end.
Sad because it was a tremendous platform for the people and events of Felixstowe to be recorded and enjoyed. Sad too, because Felixstowe TV was also responsible for throwing down the gauntlet to then secretary Dave Feakes for the Scribblers to write The Lost Sock, which was then filmed with the voluntary help from scores of local folk and businesses.
So why has Felixstowe TV closed? Well there was little financial support from local businesses to make it viable to continue and so the plug had to be pulled.
So from the Scribblers to all those involved with Felixstowe TV over the last fascinating six years, a sincere and heartfelt thankyou.
But wait....
